Audition Requirements

Thank you for preparing for your audition over Zoom. Please play what you are comfortable with, and that best displays your skills. All students may be asked to sight-read. For information on the process CLICK HERE.

Youth Symphony level

String Auditions for Youth Symphony

  • 3 octave major scale of your choice
  • 2 octave melodic minor scale (a three octave melodic minor scale for violin players) of your choice
  • A short solo, or excerpt from a solo, no longer than 3 minutes

Brass and Woodwind auditions for Youth Symphony

  • 2 octave major scale of your choice
  • 2 octave melodic minor scale of your choice
  • A short solo, or excerpt from a solo, no longer than 3 minutes.

Percussion auditions for Youth Symphony

  • Prepare a challenging snare drum solo
  • Play a mallet selection (must fit on a xylophone range – no marimba available for auditions).

Junior Orchestra level

 String auditions for Junior Orchestra

  • 2 octave major scale of your choice
  • 2 octave melodic minor scale of your choice
  • A short solo, or excerpt from a solo, no longer than 3 minutes in length

Brass and Woodwind auditions for Junior Orchestra

  • 2 octave major scale of your choice
  • 2 octave melodic minor scale of your choice 
  • A short solo, or excerpt from a solo, no longer than 3 minutes. Material from Rubank’s Advanced Method or the equivalent would be appropriate.  Audition material for Western International Band Clinic or All-State Band would also be suitable.

Percussion auditions for Junior Orchestra

  • Prepare a challenging snare drum solo
  • Play a mallet selection (must fit on a xylophone range – no marimba available for auditions).

Little Symphony Level

Strings only, with at least 3 years of instruction required. Private teachers should encourage their students to demonstrate their most advanced skills.

  • Two major one-octave scales, 1 or 2 octaves. (Violinists are encouraged to demonstrate a shift to third position with, for example, a 2-octave D major scale).
  • Cellists who have worked on shifting and playing 2-octave scales are encouraged to demonstrate that in their audition.
  • A short solo, or excerpt from a solo, no longer than 3 minutes in length 
  • Selected sight-reading
